Get to Know Me

I am Dr. Shavaun Johnson DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC.  I have been working in behavioral/mental health for over 10 years now in various settings including corrections, inpatient care, outpatient care, community mental health,  residential care, and acute treatment. I graduated from Chamberlain College of Nursing in 2016 with my BSN and later decided to go back to further my education. In August of 2020, I obtained my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I am now certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to treat across the lifespan.

I was inspired to go into the field of mental health for several reasons. The most important being my very own experiences. In my years of living, I’ve come to realize that life gets very hard at times and it doesn’t treat you differently based on personal circumstances. Many trials and tribulations have shaped my character today so I am more than grateful for the adversity and harsh realities that I’ve had to come to terms with. At the time I remember struggling to understand why me? But eventually, I reframed my mindset to think why not? You will not always win the battle but you will overcome the war and the wounds you have left behind are just that. They don’t define who you are but are simply small reminders of how much fight you really have in you. We can be our own worst critics but when you take the time to appreciate yourself and beauty in the struggle, you’ll learn to acknowledge all of the small gains in life.
